Does a CCTV installer need a licence in Victoria?
Yes. Since 19 June 2025 installing security equipment, including CCTV, for someone else is a licensed private security activity in Victoria. You do not need a licence to install a system at your own property.

Can my camera or video doorbell record the neighbours?
Not their private activities. The Surveillance Devices Act 1999 makes it an offence in Victoria to use a camera to record a private activity without consent, such as inside a neighbour's home or fenced yard. Point cameras at your own property.
Who is allowed to install Cat6 data cabling?
A cabler registered under the ACMA cabling provider rules, with structured cabling on their registration, or someone working under their direct supervision. The work must follow the Wiring Rules, AS/CA S009.
Can the nbn connection box be moved to another room?
Often, yes. For properties with an nbn Fixed Line connection, nbn says a registered cabler can often move the connection box or related cabling without an application to nbn. Some other changes need an application to nbn.
Does a wired doorbell need an electrician?
If it connects to your fixed 240 volt wiring, yes. In Victoria that work must be done by a licensed electrician, who gives you a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Is GST charged?
